The Bounty of Summer

What we change inwardly will change outer reality.

Happy Wednesday!

I hope your summer is off to a great start! As we head into these summer months, please remember to stay hydrated and use sunscreen.

Each month Macon Mental Health Matters hosts a mental health pop-up gym at a recreational center in town, they do change locations each month. This month the pop-up gym is on June 10 at Bloomfield-Gilead Park. Click the link to RSVP. https://www.maconmentalhealthmatters.com/popup

Every second Saturday in Macon!

This month is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness Month. This is a good segue from Mental Health Awareness Month, as the both are very closely tied to each other.

According to Psychiatry.org “PTSD has been known by many names in the past, such as “shell shock” during the years of World War I and “combat fatigue” after World War II, but PTSD does not just happen to combat veterans. PTSD can occur in all people, of any ethnicity, nationality or culture, and at any age. PTSD affects approximately 3.5 percent of U.S. adults every year. The lifetime prevalence of PTSD in adolescents ages 13 -18 is 8%. An estimate one in 11 people will be diagnosed with PTSD in their lifetime. Women are twice as likely as men to have PTSD. Three ethnic groups – U.S. Latinos, African Americans, and Native Americans/Alaska Natives – are disproportionately affected and have higher rates of PTSD than non-Latino whites.”

PTSD is a mental health condition caused by either experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event. The Mayo Clinic says that most people who go through traumatic events might have some initial trouble adjusting, but time and self-care will usually help it get better. If the symptoms get worse and last for months or years and interfere with your daily life, you could have PTSD. “Getting effective treatment after PTSD symptoms develop can be critical to reduce symptoms and improve function.”

Our wonderful vendors are hard at work getting all their goodness together for you! Be sure to check out all our bakers! They each have something different to offer.

Just as our bakers each offer unique items, our produce vendors do as well! Loy, Kaneish, Mitchell, Mr. Porter, Ms Eva, and Amanda all have a wonderful selection of produce for us this week!

Kaneisha has watermelons, juices (full of wonderful fruits and veggies), tomatoes, red cabbage and collards.  Loy has plums, peaches, cucumbers, watermelon, tomatoes, collards, onions, peppers, mangoes, and yellow meat melons. Mr. Porter has containers of greens and cabbages and strawberries, as well as other fresh fruits and vegetables already harvested. Mandy with Mandylandfun has some sunflowers and tomato starts and herbs! Mitchell has spicy salad mix micros, alfalfa sprouts, possibly basil, and cantaloupe sprouts! Ms. Eva of Middle GA Novelties is pulling out all the stops! She is bringing yellow squash, zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, purple hulls peas, okra, roasted peanuts, dried herbs (mullein, echinacea, sage, rosemary, bay leaves, poultry seasoning and chai mix) all grown using organic practices.

This is from a blog I just recently discovered! I love crisp stewed okra and this is just the dish to go with basically anything! I chose to feature this blog rather than my own recipe because he had some really great pairings and he has suggested mood music to go with his food!
