It’s Getting Hot Out Here!
It’s July!
This month we wanted to acknowledge BIPOC Mental Health Awareness. This month is to raise awareness of the challenges that affect the mental health of racial and ethnic minority groups.
Dr. Gloria Cisse with the Southern Center for Choice Theory says, “Historically, our mental health has been ignored almost completely. Much of the research is done on us, rather than with us. The way we deal with mental health is very different.”
“Racial and ethnic minorities often suffer from poor mental health outcomes due to multiple factors, including lack of access to quality mental health care services, cultural stigma surrounding mental health care, discrimination, and overall lack of awareness about mental health.” from the US Department of Health and Human Services.
The CDC says, “Many people from racial and ethnic minority groups have difficulty getting mental health care. This can be due to many different reasons, such as cost or not having adequate health insurance coverage. It may also be challenging to find providers from one’s racial or ethnic group. Stigma or negative ideas about mental health care may also prevent people from seeking services.”
Macon Mental Health Matters is one such service that offers mental health services at no cost.
