March Among the Cherry Blossoms
It’s Cherry Blossom Festival time!
What are your plans for the rest of Cherry Blossom? Macon also turned 200 this year, and the combination of these two events has been really fun, I think! There are so many fun things to do and see! This weather has been a bit interesting with the festivities. We are looking forward to warm and sunny weather for Thursday! Mitch of Buckwheat Farms is out this week, unfortunately, but we will have everyone else out, so come on out and enjoy the wonderful day!
We are on the downhill of the month and National Nutrition Month. Remember that it’s Fuel for the Future and we’ve discussed several things that would be fuel for our future. Here is the link to previous posts about that.
This week I wanted to talk about diets again, because they are so ingrained within the nutritional world. We think about restrictive diets as a way to become a healthier weight, but we do not think about how they are not sustainable for keeping off the weight, or even if they are a healthy way to lose weight! As a nutritionist student I have come across a lot of diets and what is called diet culture. Diet culture is everywhere! From how we view our bodies to how we choose our foods. We often view skinny bodies as healthier than bodies that have more curves. We choose foods that say they are clean or skinny over other foods that don’t have a “healthy” looking label. This is all diet culture, and we do a lot of this subconsciously.
Shana Spence is a registered dietician nutritionist that I found on social media when I first started my educational journey. Her specialty is Health At Every Size (HAES) and intuitive eating and really calling attention to what is diet culture and how it can become disordered eating. I shared one of her articles previously about the Mediterranean Diet. I really love her insight about how we can be healthy at any size. We can start wherever we are in our journey and choose options that support our health.
“Health at Every Size (HAES) is an important movement that is happening now. Our current health system is flawed and values those in a thinner body despite their health. HAES acknowledges that not every large body is "unhealthy" and not every thin body is "healthy". Just because someone is in a larger body, they still deserve the same respect and care as everyone else. Everyone deserves to go to the doctor and not have their whole visit based on their weight. Not every diagnosis is weight related.”
Her views about how we can all be healthy, how we should all be treated with dignity, how we should be believed regarding our bodies is something that I think we all need to hear. Her article about earning calories is really good, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
