Planting Flowers and Hope

To grow your own food gives you a sort of power and it gives people dignity. You know exactly what you’re eating because you grew it. It’s good, it’s nourishing and you did this for yourself, your family, and your community.
— Karen Washington co-founder Black Urban Growers and Rise and Root Farm

Happy Wednesday!

The weather last week turned out to be too dangerous to have a market, but thankfully this week looks to be amazing! We have lots of produce and other wonderful goodies for you this week!

April has many observances like October does, so we are covering a few over the month. April is appropriately National Garden Month! Historically, we begin to start our gardens after the last frost of the season which we usually mark as the first week after Easter Sunday.

Gardening is a lot of things to a lot of people. It helps many people center themselves, they find it calming to dig in the dirt and plant plants that they can nurture and grow into food or something pretty to look at.

Gardening with your family is a great way to spend time with those you love. You all learn about the soil and the plants, you get some physical activity and daylight. You learn to grow your own food! This is a great economical way to cut costs on your grocery bill. It is a great way to get little ones to learn and therefore are more likely to try new fruits and vegetables. Plus, if you have an abundance, you can come sell them at the market or put them up for later.

Gardening supplies such as seeds, plant starts, and canning supplies are all SNAP eligible! This means you can use your SNAP card to start your garden! Mitchell has some plant starts at his tent you can purchase with the green tokens you get when we double SNAP benefits at the market tent. Mr. Porter also has pots of greens and strawberries all ready to plant or even leave in the container for a convenient container garden set-up if you don’t have a lot of garden space.

This is a handy link if you want to see where you can purchase food bearing plants and seeds:
