Hispanic Heritage Month
Happy Tuesday All!
This week kicks off the start of Hispanic Heritage Month! Thursday to be exact! Hispanic Heritage Month started out as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Johnson and was later expanded to include an entire month (Sept 15-Oct 15) under President Reagan. We celebrate this month to recognize the many contributions of Hispanic American people. As we all know, many Hispanic American people work in agriculture. As of last year our population was composed of roughly 6% Hispanic Americans, but makes up 23% of our nation’s agricultural producers. Without these producers, we would not have food on our tables. There are many champions of Hispanic Heritage Month, but I wanted to focus on the agricultural part. One of my favorites is Dolores Clara Huerta who was an impactful leader behind the Farm Workers Rights Movement of the 1960s. Another is Evangelina Villegas, she was a cereal biochemist whose work with maize led to the creation of a high-quality protein maize. Here is more information on both of these amazing people. Further education and information about Hispanic Heritage Month can be found here. I found this blog post very interesting as well!
