September Vibes

But there was no autumn in the air today; the sun was still all August, although calendar August was almost two weeks gone.

Welcome to September! I’m so happy that fall is on the way! While we may not see cooler weather until later, I really enjoy this time of year. The leaves are starting to change, but it’s still warm and I can enjoy a popsicle at the market. September also kicks off National Food Safety Education Month. Food Safety is very important, one of the first classes I had as a Nutritionist student was Food Safety. Many of our population are immunocompromised and a food-borne illness can be extremely dangerous for them. Immunocompromised populations include babies, elderly, and those with other health issues such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes, etc. Food-borne illnesses include salmonella, listeria, and E. coli among others. It’s important to handle and store our food properly so that we do not risk contracting these illnesses. Here’s a link to some really great resources about food safety and education for all. https://www.fightbac.org/nfsem/

Our wonderful produce vendors have pre-order sites. This is a great way to guarantee the seasonal goodness they have. Their hours are below:

Rag and Frass Farm along with Middle Georgia Growers Co-op has a pre-order site that you can access on Mondays for pickup at the market farmersweb.com/producers/ragandfrassfarm

Salamander Springs is having a plant sale on the 10th! More information below the recipes!

On to the dishes we can make with the market offerings this week! I chose these two because I honestly couldn’t make up my mind! Candied Jalapenos are a really nice little treat with some heat and would go amazingly well with the Roasted Pumpkin Slices! I personally love adding garlic to my candied jalapenos and taking a block of cream cheese and pouring the jalapenos over them and eating them with crackers.

Everyone is in pumpkin mode since the first of September, so naturally there is a pumpkin dish. It’s a savory one, but the smoky flavors really say fall to me. It reminds me of campfires and pumpkin patches.

A great way to sweeten and heat up any dish!

A wonderfully, simple way to make a savory pumpkin dish. You could even top it with the candied jalapenos!
