Where Did October Go?
“If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
Where has October gone!? We're nearly in the middle and before you know it, it will be Halloween and Thanksgiving and Christmas!
Anyway, I wanted to talk a bit about the month of October. October has many health observances, the most well known being Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There are a few others as well. I wanted to talk about one in particular though: Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The umbrella Napier Heights Food Co-op is under is a nonprofit called Southern Center for Choice Theory. NHFC is just one part of that, another is C-Qul (Choosing a Quality Life). SCCT offers mental health services for the community and C-Qul has a number of initiatives that the community can access as well. NHFC helps to make sure there is food in the community that is accessible.
Why am I telling you all of this? All of this ties into domestic violence awareness. Oftentimes we only think of the mental health aspect of this, but food insecurity can also be a factor. The brain is part of the body, which means if the body isn’t eating, then the brain isn’t being fed either. There are other aspects of this as well, such as the toll food insecurity takes on one’s mental health. Having access to food, mental health services, doctors, community resources, and more helps those who would be susceptible to DV.
There are many resources within our community that I will link here.

And remember if there is an immediate crisis dial 911 immediately or go to the nearest emergency room! Another number for mental health crises is 988 call or text.
This week we Loy’s is bringing apples, muscadines, scuppernongs, plums, mangoes, tomatoes, collards, turnips, rutabagas, tangerines, and yellow meat melons.
This week we have two recipes! Rutabaga fries and Muscadine sorbet. I know, I know, it sounds interesting, but hear me out.
I have never been a huge fan of rutabaga. I love turnips, but not their cousin the rutabaga. That is until I made fries out of the roots! That is a total game-changer!
The muscadine sorbet is easy and sweet and a great way to enjoy a late summer/fall fruit while it’s still blazing hot outside.
